Fuel in your boot

There's been an increase in the price of fuel in the world market over the last three months mainly as a result of disturbances in Nigeria's Niger Delta. We usually enjoy availability here except when there is an impending increase in pump prices and suddenly there'd be very long queues because the marketers want to hoard at low prices then sell at higher cost.

Junior church

This is the Children class of my church. With the way the children are enjoying the teacher's lesson, it makes me remember my time as a kid. It sure is fun being a youngster!

Civic Centre

The Civic Centre is located in Victoria Island, the highbrow commercial nerve of Lagos. It is one of the new monuments that dot the Lagos landscape.

Give us our due!

I saw these group of workers of the John Holt company protesting near my office yesterday. I learnt that the shipping division of the company was closed down and the staff laid off so the national union decided to picket the organisation's premises in order to press home their demands for reinstatement of their colleagues. I hope they get their wishes.

Today is June 12, a public holiday in Lagos to commemorate the freest and fairest elections ever held in Nigeria, June 12 1993, which was unfortunately annulled by the military junta then. Nigeria has since returned to civilian rule but there's still much left to be desired in the way our leaders rule.

Sunrise

Saw this sunrise on my way to work yesterday. It is beautiful.

A goaty ride

When they say 'stubborn as a goat', this is what it means. Saw these men trying to take these goats on a ride to the slaughter house but I feel that the goats had got wind of the situation as they tried to make a dash for it. The motorbike groaned under the heavyweight of the passengers as it made its way up the hill. Can you see the thick smoke from the exhaust?

Dark clouds

Every morning here in Lagos we get dark clouds these days. Sometimes it pours, other times it just clears off. But today it's been pouring like the heavens are ready to empty their reserves. Funny enough, I learnt that it's been very hot in neighbouring Ghana. I wish the sunny days will come back again.

Umbrellas

It has been raining here all day and suddenly the umbrellas have been removed from their hiding place. I found these ones at the entrance of an office near where I work. I admit this is not a very good picture but as the rains continue pouring I'm sure to catch a better representation.

The day's headline

Today's headline in one of Lagos' major dailies is about the rising cost of cement and the plans to crash the cost by Dangote, an industrialist who has just been listed among the Forbes' 500 richest billionaires in the world.

But more interesting for me is the picture of Barack Obama and Hilary Clinton, both presidential candidates of America's Democratic Party. The US elections are closely monitored here in Lagos and there's even an association that's campaigning for Obama. You can see their site here. It is interesting how a lot of Nigerians are divided in support of both candidates. But it is baffling because no matter who emerges, they cannot even vote!
